They Asked for a Better Salesperson. The Problem Was Never the Salesperson.

When clients describe the hire they want, they are usually describing the wrong fix.

A freight forwarding company tells us they need a better salesperson. We listen. Then we ask a different question.

The category of error most hiring requests carry is not about the candidate. It is about the system the candidate steps into. Companies overestimate the individual and underestimate the environment.

A strong sales executive brings logistics fluency, sharp relationship skills, negotiation ability, and real insight into customer needs. Those qualities matter. But they are inputs to a working commercial structure, not a replacement for one.

A great hire does not fix a broken territory. An unclear value proposition does not sharpen because someone talented is now carrying it. An undocumented sales process does not run itself because the person in the seat has more resilience.

The assumption underneath most requests is that the last person simply was not good enough. Ask the right questions and the discovery is almost always the same: no one in that seat was ever set up to win. The problem predates the person.

The right move is to build the conditions first. Then write the job spec.

At Darius and Company, we diagnose before we place. That is what it means to be Freight Forwarding Commercial Growth Partners.
