Promote from within or hire outside. Two defensible calls. One question about how you think about commercial growth.
Here's the split. When a freight forwarding company needs a new sales leader, two rooms of competent people reach opposite conclusions.
One room promotes the producer who already knows the lanes, the clients, and the floor. That protects institutional knowledge: carrier mix, trade lanes, and client relationships that took years to build. It's a known quantity with an unknown ceiling.
The other room hires outside for someone who brings a fresh book of business and no legacy assumptions. That's a book the company does not already own, and internal promotion can't generate it. It's an unknown quantity with a potentially higher floor.
The risk profiles are fundamentally different. Both rooms are right, depending on what the freight sales team actually needs at this stage.
