Lowest Rate Wins the Shipper

October 1, 2026

Every freight sales producer has heard it from a manager, a peer, or a shipper on the phone: the lowest rate wins the freight. It sounds reasonable, because some weeks it looks exactly true.

On a spot quote a shipper has sent to five forwarders, price often does decide it. That case is real, and it is why the belief survives.

But the freight worth chasing is not the one-off quote. It is the shipper who books every week. That shipper chooses who they trust when a container is held or a flight is missed. Rate rarely decides who they keep calling.

Here is the trap. Win on rate alone and you can lose the account the same way, to the next forwarder a little cheaper. Price won business has no loyalty built in.

The producers who sell only on price are competing in the one arena where they have the least control.

A practical shift for this week: open your next prospecting call by asking what went wrong on the shipper's last shipment, not what they pay per box. The answer tells you what you are really selling.

From where we sit, working exclusively with freight forwarding sales professionals, we see this play out constantly. One client told us a producer we placed became their top producer within three months. That start does not come from being the cheapest voice on the phone.

The rate gets you considered. What you do after the booking is what keeps the shipper.
