Most freight sales producers walk into the career conversation with their manager and say the safest line they know: "I'm open to wherever the company needs me." It sounds loyal. It usually gets you nowhere in particular.
The line is well meant. But it hands your manager no direction, so the default answer is more of the same seat you're already in.
Say this instead:
"I want to grow into owning the shipper relationships I open, start to finish. What does the path to that look like here?"
➡️ That names a scope and asks for the route in one breath. It takes ownership instead of waiting to be placed, and it gives your manager something concrete to measure you against and advocate for.
It also points the conversation exactly where forwarding leaders already look when they decide who grows: relationship building, reading what shippers actually need, and the ability to negotiate and close.
Here's the reframe. The career conversation is a sales conversation. You would never tell a shipper "we can do whatever you need." Don't say it about your own trajectory either.
