5 Questions to Ask Before You Take a Freight Sales Role

October 1, 2026

Most freight forwarding sales professionals vet a new role the wrong way. They ask about base salary and territory before they ever ask the questions that actually predict whether they'll win.

Before you say yes, run these five on every prospective employer. The answers tell you more than any offer letter.

1. Ask what the top rep's book looks like by vertical and trade lane. A company that can't answer clearly hasn't thought hard enough about what it's asking you to build.

2. Ask to see the carrier mix and contract history. A strong carrier portfolio is a sales asset. A weak one is a ceiling you'll hit in six months.

3. Ask exactly how new business is credited and how splits are handled. That tells you more about the team's sales culture than any org chart.

4. Ask what happened to the last person in this role. The answer, and how it's delivered, tells you whether this is a growth seat or a revolving door.

5. Ask your recruiter how many freight forwarding placements they've made in your vertical. Someone who speaks ocean and air forwarding will protect you. Someone who doesn't will cost you.

We've spent years inside freight forwarding. Not logistics broadly. The trade lanes, the carriers, the verticals, the pricing dynamics, the sales cultures.

If you want someone who speaks freight forwarding fluently on your behalf, that's exactly what we do. Reach out and let's talk about your next move.
